This movie really touched my heart. It's not a sad movie, but it touches you. YOU MUST SEE IT!
I had no high expectations on the film because I've read the book. Yes, you know how it usually is. The book is almost always better than the movie. But I don't think so! You can not compare the two ways to experience the same story (if they are not different in the movie and the book as it is sometimes).
The movie is about the Somalian girl, Waris Dirie, who is born in a nomadic family. When she is very young she flees across the desert from a supposed marriage to a very old man. With help from her grandmother, she manages to eventually move to London where she lives and works with her nasty relatives for years. When she finally leave, she is a young woman. She makes a wonderful friend and later she becomes a Top Model and ambassador for the UN. She even manages to prohibit female circumcision of girls in many countries.
But still 6000 girls are circumcised each day! It is horrible! I can't even believe it!
I read an article about this once. There was a man who said that if you do not cut off the woman's inner and outer labia and clitoris, they will grow until they are as large as the outgrowth under the turkey's chin! Can you believe how stupid! And terrible! The women, mothers, they are not circumcising their daughters of this reason. Their fear is that their daughters will be alone and never get married or much worse... They will have the same value as whores! This is really terrible!!!!!!!!!!!!
ATTENTION! This is not anything that is written in the Koran and it has nothing to do with Muslims. This is a tradition that comes from some countries, but has nothing to do with Islam. A lot of people do not know that, so I just wanted to clarify it!!!!!
